Description

Bertel Thorvaldsen was born in Denmark, but it was in Italy that his talent found the perfect stage to flourish. The son of a sculptor of Icelandic origin, he grew up surrounded by manual work and the fascination of art. When he arrived in Rome, still young, it was as if he had found a home again. Inspired by the classical forms of antiquity, he soon stood out as one of the greatest sculptors of his time, rivaling the Renaissance masters.

His Roman studio became a meeting point for artists and admirers, and his fame crossed borders. He created works that seemed to breathe, as if the marble remembered flesh and movement. His sculpture of Jason, which placed him at the center of the artistic scene, impressed so much that even Napoleon commissioned works from him. But despite his international success, he remained faithful to his own vision, not allowing himself to be overshadowed by the whims of the nobility.

After decades in Italy, he returned to Denmark as a true legend. He was received with honors and left a legacy that shaped Scandinavian art. At the end of his life, he transformed his own house into a museum, ensuring that his creations would continue to inspire future generations. His name is eternalized not only in statues but in the very history of European sculpture.
