Description

Meleager was one of those Greek heroes whose life seemed shaped by destiny, bravery, and a touch of tragedy. Son of Queen Althaea, it is said that at the moment of his birth, the Moirai — the goddesses of fate — appeared and foretold that his life would last only as long as a piece of firewood remained intact. Althaea, desperate to protect her son, hid the piece of wood. But time and human emotions are never so simple.

Years later, Meleager rose to fame as one of Greece’s greatest hunters, especially during the famous Calydonian Boar Hunt. Alongside other heroes and the huntress Atalanta, he faced the monstrous boar sent by Artemis as revenge. Atalanta was the first to wound the beast, but Meleager dealt the final blow. Captivated by her, he offered her the hunting trophy. This sparked a family dispute, as his uncles claimed the credit for the victory. In the heat of the conflict, Meleager killed his own relatives.

When Althaea learned that her son had taken the lives of her brothers, she was consumed by a brutal conflict between a mother’s love and a sister’s grief. In an act that borders the mythical and the profoundly human, she threw the piece of wood — hidden for so many years — into the fire. Meleager, as foretold by the Moirai, died in that very instant. A life shaped by heroism, ended by a fate that, even when known, could never be avoided.
