Description

The elegant dogs known as The Townley Greyhounds are more than mere marble sculptures: they are symbols of an ancient devotion between humans and their four-legged companions. Carved in the classical tradition, these greyhounds represent not only the physical beauty of the breed, with their slender, muscular bodies, but also the emotional bond that, since Roman times, connected nobles to their hunting dogs.

It is said that in Roman villas, it was common for statues of pets to be placed in gardens or near family tombs as silent guardians and eternal companions. Greyhounds, in particular, held a place of honor. Fast, loyal, and graceful, they were seen as an extension of their owners’ own elegance. The Townley Greyhounds perfectly reflect this tradition: two figures that, though still in marble, seem ready to run at any moment after an imaginary prey or simply alongside their master.

The name originates from Charles Townley, an 18th-century British collector passionate about classical art. He acquired these sculptures in Italy, believing them to represent the pinnacle of Roman decorative art. Since then, the greyhounds have become almost legendary in the world of archaeology and art. Today, when looking at them, it’s easy to forget they are just stone — so strong is the sense of restrained movement and the silent story carried in their attentive eyes and proud posture.
